An Outdoor Thanksgiving Dinner: It’s Easier Than You Think!

The concept of an outdoor Thanksgiving dinner dates back to … well … the very first Thanksgiving dinner, nearly 400 years ago. Back in 1621, Pilgrims joined the Pokanoket Wampanoag Native Americans for a feast celebrating the harvest (read more about the history of Thanksgiving here). And as far as historians know, that feast happened outdoors.

The first outdoor Thanksgiving dinner happened in 1621. It also happened to be the very first Thanksgiving dinner ever.

Today, most families celebrate Thanksgiving indoors, at least since Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863. Each November, families gather indoors for a big Thanksgiving feast. It may not even occur to them that feasting outdoors is an option. And a really fun option at that.

Modern party tents make it possible to enjoy a special outdoor Thanksgiving dinner unlike anything most families have ever experienced. With the right equipment, your family can enjoy a memorable outdoor Thanksgiving dinner in comfort.

Party Tents Make Comfortable Outdoor Dining Possible, Even in Fall

Depending on where in the United States you’re located, party tents can be used through most of the year. Warming a party tent is easy, too, so long as you do what you can to avoid cold weather damage. A reasonably large swath of the United States should see temperatures exceeding 40 degrees fahrenheit on Thanksgiving day, so party tents are definitely in play.

So what will we need to set up the perfect outdoor Thanksgiving dinner? For starters, we’ll need at least one high quality party tent, large enough for the whole family to gather underneath. That party tent should have tent sidewalls too. And in cooler climates, you’re going to want to add on a tent heater as well.

Next, you’ll all need places to sit. And we’re guessing most of you aren’t keen on the idea of hauling your dining room table and chairs outside, either. But don’t worry, there’s a solution for this too! Simply pick up some folding tables and folding chairs, which can be used outdoors or inside. You’ll find great uses for folding tables and chairs all year round.

With lots of children present, you may also want to consider setting up a bounce house, or maybe a few inflatable games. I think I can safely vouch for a lot of you parents reading this that it’s helpful to give kids something to do while the grown ups are making and carrying food around.
