What Size Dance Floor do You Need to Get?

One of the first questions you’re likely to ask when browsing portable dance floors relates to size. Just how big of a dance floor do I need, really? Thankfully, figuring out what size dance floor to get isn’t very complicated.

You’ll want to make sure the portable dance space you’re getting is large enough for everyone to have fun. It needs to be sturdily built, and looking good is definitely a necessity too.

First, we’ll need to answer a few important questions about your needs:

  • What sort of event(s) are you planning?
  • At most, how many quests are you expecting?
  • How much indoor or outdoor space do you have to work with?
  • What’s your overall budget?

Figuring out how large of a dance floor you need is remarkably simple once you have a few numbers. And armed with this information, we can figure out exactly what size dance floor you need. So let’s electric slide our way toward some answers, shall we?

Space + People + Music = Dancing

Okay, let’s calculate our space! We’ll start with the most important question: how many guests you’re expecting. That’s going to be the biggest driving factor in determining how large your portable dancing area needs to be.

At most events, only approximately 40 to 60 percent of attendees are going to be dancing at one time. You can usually budget space for 60 percent of the total number of people attending, or go up to 70 percent to be safe. If your crowd is older or the event is more formal, you can probably cut that down to 35 to 45 percent safely.

Sorry, but there’s a little more math we need to do. Let’s multiply the number of guests you expect to dance times five. The five represents square feet; you want to give dancers some free space to move (and groove), and approximately 4 to 6 feet is usually ideal for most individual dancers.

Couples will usually dance closer to each other, but you should give them five square feet each anyway. It’s always better to have more dance floor space than not enough!

Using this calculation, let’s figure out how big of a dance floor is needed for 100 guests. Assuming you’re expecting 60 dancers, you’ll need a total of 300 square feet (300 x 5). An 18’x18’ dance floor would add up to 324 square feet, giving you more than enough space for guests to dance the night away.

Price and physical space will of course help determine how big your dance floor can be. But as long as around 25 to 30 percent of your guests can dance together at once, they’re going to have a great time.
